How We Met: The Hello Kitty Story

Russ enjoys telling this story every chance he gets. Most of you heard this story before possibly even more than once. For those of you who haven’t, here goes….fairy tale style...

Once upon a time, there was a very idealistic young lady, named Imelda, who immigrated to the United States from the Philippines to pursue the “ideal” life. You know…super career, super “man”, and eventually, super family. Coming from a country/background that has put great emphasis on the value of the status that come from a good education, the ideal man is a blue eyed Harvard-educated American.

Imelda wasted no time in the pursuit of this “ideal” life. The following month upon arriving to the U.S., she enrolled in an accelerated computer course at Computer Learning Center in San Francisco. On the first day of class she noticed this friendly and funny blue eyed American who walked to the front of the class. Well, he happened to be the computer instructor! Then she learned he has a Harvard education! She thought, well is that a sign or what?! So once again, she wasted no time and pulled out her favorite Hello Kitty stationery and wrote to the instructor. Yes! She did! As previously stated, she was young and idealistic, and as what typically comes from youth; she had the courage to go after what she wanted. She doesn’t remember exactly what she wrote but according to Russ it goes something like this: “I came to America to find a blue eyed guy with a Harvard education and you’re it”. A little too courageous if you ask her now. And the rest, as they say, is History. Or shall we say, and they lived happily ever after.
